THE INSPIRATION – 50 years ago, drivers Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep won Le Mans in their Martini Porsche 917k at a record speed and distance, only beaten twice since! The car’s secret advantage came from its unique Magnesium-alloy chassis: super lightweight yet fragile, and notably hard to weld. This secret is celebrated in Ambrose’s sculpture.
THE SCULPTURE – Jonny Ambrose’s digitally designed sculpture is a stylised, half scale Porsche 917 in tubular carbon fibre and aluminium, connected by custom 3d printed ‘organic’ joints. The polygonal 2.5m long design, with detailed representative chassis, creates a bold and playful 3d maze of interweaving lines to look into and wonder at.
THE LOOK – The half scale chassis is portrayed by aluminium tubes, not welded but uniquely connected by bespoke ‘3d printed’ joints, all individually designed and constructed by the artist. With a carbon fibre ‘body’ also connected by black 3d printed joints, the result is a lightweight, fragile looking sculptural maze of lines to lose yourself in.
The sculpture comes with an integral white plinth base. Alternative options can be arranged.
Each sculpture comes with:
1 – Each sculpture is signed and dated by the artist.
2 – Certificate of Authenticity, complete with numbered edition, signed and dated by the artist.
3 – Protective baize underside to each plinth.
4 – Protective white cloth gloves, to professionally handle the artwork
International shipping is available (secure crate / tracked / insured).
Local collection from my workshop is possible by appointment.
THE INSPIRATION – The beautiful Porsche 904 was a 1960’s race car that was also built for the road, with just over 100 build for racing homologation. Also known as the Carrera GTS.
THE SCULPTURE – This sculpture accentuates Steven James’ stunning car form with a long curved wooden swept tail section, using multiple stripes of steamed and hand bent interlocking ash. A beautiful long plinth of Walnut features in this artwork. The car form is cast concrete, polished and real gold leaf covering it, with a distressed finish look.
THE LOOK – The angled rear leads to long arcing curved strips of ash. These handcrafted wooden tail elements twist and interweave, portraying an imagined aerodynamic airflow. Purchasers can choose their own bespoke custom specification of materials and finishes.
THE INSPIRATION – The legendary Porsche 911 RSR was nicknamed the ‘Mary Stuart’ for its large wrap-around rear tail. It won the 1973 Targa Florio, the great Sicilian road race.
THE SCULPTURE – This sculpture accentuates Steven James’ stunning car form with a long curved wooden swept tail section, using multiple stripes of steamed and hand bent interlocking ash. Carbon fibre streaks represent the rear tyre marks, and a thick oak plinth feature in this artwork. The car form is cast concrete, polished and real gold leaf covering it, with a distressed finish look.
THE LOOK – The rear spoiler leads to a huge arcing curved section of ash. Other handcrafted wooden tail elements twist and interweave, portraying an imagined aerodynamic airflow. Purchasers can choose their own bespoke custom specification of materials and finishes.
These images show the artwork from various angles.
THE INSPIRATION – The legendary Porsche 935 was nicknamed the ‘Wlale Tail’ & also ‘Moby Dick’ for its extra long sweeping rear end. The 935, in it’s many guises, won every one in every 3 races it entered.
THE SCULPTURE – This sculpture accentuates the sleek form and swept tail section, using multiple vertical planes in flame polished acrylic. Carbon fibre, anodised wheel rims and 3d printed elements all feature in this artwork. The race-car flared wheel arches also feature on this dramatic looking sculpture.
THE LOOK – The distinctive, deep recessed red ‘BBS’ ‘turbo fan’ rims are portrayed by CNC lathed aluminium, anodised with colour. Purchasers can choose their own bespoke custom specification, and even select a ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ version, where each side looks different (by choosing different wheel options per side).
These images are currently CG CAD design renders for illustration purposes of the different material combinations.
NOTE: all sculptures come with an integral plinth base in various materials (see ‘Material options’ section below).
Below shows the material options for each sculpture section.

Deliberately angular portrayal of the iconic and successful Le Mans winner in the 1980s. A timeless race car design, with it’s long flowing tail and massive underside venturi tunnels creating downforce and trubulance, shown by the contrasting shards behind it.
The angular nature of this piece is in reference to my past career in the Videogames industry, where years ago, creating life like models from low polygons was a real skill to describe a curved surface with as few vertex points as possible. Hence the shapes seen in this work.
